We get asked a lot how stress affects weight.
For many people, stress can have a direct impact on their weight – either loss or gain.
In some cases, stress may lead to skipped meals, or loss of appetite or desire to eat. In others, it may lead to poor food choices, or eating for “comfort” regardless of hunger.
Stress also activates our fight or flight response, and subsequently the release of hormones including adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline prepares your body for intense activity, but can reduce your desire to eat. Cortisol signal your body to temporarily suppress functions that are non-essential in a crisis to save energy for critical functions, but can lead to a sluggish and inefficient digestive system.
Then there’s effect of stress on sleep. Stress can make it hard to fall and/or stay asleep, leaving you feeling fatigued and unmotivated. Poor sleep quality can also cause hormonal issues that can affect your metabolism.
Too much stress can have a negative impact on body & mind. Actively managing stress may seem like “one more thing” but the effort will pay off in improved short- and long-term wellness.
